Craftsmen and artists collaborate in the creation of an exclusive object, destined to preserve its charm through the years

Iconic, precious and extremely beautiful. We admire the shapes, manufacture and design of jewelry and are fascinated by the light and the decorations that embellish it. But how do items of jewelry achieve that perfect harmony which, as if by magic, is able to capture everyone's attention? The birth of a precious accessory is the result of long and hard work, one that needs patience, passion and enormous ability. Items created by various craftsmen and artists, all united by the same ideal: to collaborate in the creation of an exclusive object, destined to preserve its charm through the years.

There are at least seven key figures involved in the creation of an item of jewelry. Professions that were handed down from father to son in the past and which are now taught in specialized schools, professional institutes and post-graduate courses. Everything originates from an idea, conceived by the Draftsman or Jewelry designer, the creative mind behind the item who decides on the line, originality and character of the future creation and then transfers his/her thoughts into a sketch on paper.

The next figure is the Graphic designer, whose task is to translate this jewelry drawing, down to the tiniest detail, into a graphic design on the computer so that it can be made into a wax or metal model.
The skilful Modeler will then create a hand-made prototype of the item in wax or poor metal, which will then be introduced into the production chain.

In the universe of precious stones, a leading role is played by the Stone-selector who has to know how to identify, select and choose the stones that will best suit the jewelry item's design in terms of size, shape and cut.
Another decisive figure is the Cutter who will cut and adapt the stones to the model and make the mounter and engraver's jobs easier. These latter figures now tend to overlap and coincide. The creative cycle closes with the Bench-worker/Cleaner who carries out the final polishing operation, donating or returning shine and splendor to the completed item.

Although on the edge of the jewelry production process, the figure of the Gemologist is one of the most important. He/she needs to have vast knowledge, intuition and enormous discipline in order to identify the nature of gems, evaluate their quality and authenticity and assess their destination.

OroArezzo, the Italian jewelry Show organized by IEG, scheduled to run from 5th to 8th May, is the place where craftsmen, technicians, experts and insiders will be able to share arts, styles and techniques: an important stage for the sector and an opportunity to get a closer look at all the professions that lie behind the jewelry world scenes.
