Scapulaire Boulier Rosa Chain by Marie Lichtenberg
The scapular – from the Latin scapula, once a kind of shoulder wrap worn by Benedictine monks to protect the ordinary cassock while working in the fields – is not exactly a customary accessory, nor is it “fashionable” or sexy, but jewelry designer Marie Lichtenberg has succeeded, as always, in reinventing an object’s functions and aesthetics by drawing on ancient motifs and transforming them into something utterly contemporary in her own alternative way. And so, the series of “baby lockets,” engraved with the Evil Eye and anti-jinx messages, is now followed by “neo scapulars”: various thicknesses of chain that encircle the neck and end in pendants resembling 18-karat gold bullets, embellished with rubies or diamonds and decorated with tiny spheres of semiprecious stones and enamels, creating movement and an anything-but-ordinary full-empty effect. Scapulars and baby lockets are some of the leitmotifs of Marie Lichtenberg. Her aficionados include Rihanna, Dua Lipa and Lewis Hamilton. In her Parisian workshop-showroom in the heart of Saint Germain de Prés, the former fashion editor of Elle magazine creates her lines of collectibles with a pop soul, drawing from a professional background enriched by the melting pot of cultures she encountered in her family – thanks to the Creole origins of her Martinique-born mother – and through thousands of globe-trotting experiences. Lichtenberg positions herself in the empyrean of contemporary jewelry designers with a highly personal and recognizable touch, which is why she is also loved by celebrities such as Miley Cyrus, Dua Lipa, Rihanna and Uma Thurman, and even Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton, recently photographed with an Evil Eye purple ring.
