Excessive but with a confident attitude. That is how we could define the fil rouge linking all the new jewelry trends “captured” on the catwalks at last February’s fashion for the next Autumn/Winter 2019-2020. From New York to London, Milan and Paris, where the fashion rendezvous has just drawn to a close, jewelry seems to have played an increasingly important role by defining, and often even strengthening, the designers’ various sources of inspiration.
Earrings will not be abandoning their key role and, for the next cold season, their size and quite daring shapes are bound to catch the eye. Those that particularly capture the attention are by Prabal Gurung, ever larger and longer, decorated with a myriad of tiny beads: a delicate and amusing reminder of the typical contempt of 1980s style. The earrings by Tory Burch are elegant, yet at the same time, eccentric, with large glass stones completing the unconventional look inspired by Black Mountain College education. On the other hand, sinuous earrings with flowing shapes, one of the most conceptual jewelry trends that merges maximalism and minimalism in the name of rigorous aesthetics, reappear at Hellessy’s show. Perfect drop earrings for party girls from Brandon Maxwell and Christian Siriano, while maxi hoops by Area introduce a truly modern version of a classic that never seems to go out of fashion, just like tassel earrings and those strategically matched with asymmetric shapes and dimensions. This trend in particular, which already appeared on the catwalks some seasons ago, never ceases to charm, giving the world of jewelry that ever-current concept of considering irregularity and contrast as a distinctive and original element. An irregularity that features considerably on the Jacquemus catwalk, one of the wealthiest in terms of earring inspiration. The French designer, in fact, proposes them in many versions with different materials and shapes.

Neck, wrists and hands will certainly not be forgotten. In order to adorn these fascinating parts of the body designers have placed their trust in accessories with a highly striking visual impact, using bright stones as well as more unusual materials. The large heart-shaped pendant displayed at Oscar de la Renta’s show and his necklaces with maxi agate slides truly conquer. The jeweled chokers by Halpern are also striking with their exotic and absolutely elegant style, a tribute to Kayan’s “giraffe women”. Dries Van Noten dresses his women in chokers and maxi bangles, which, although rigid, have a fluid effect, taking romanticism to a new visionary yet sophisticated dimension, while Ulla Johnson brings stack bangles back into vogue in a version that recalls natural and ethnic elements. And the ethnic style also stood out at Isabel Marant’s show with her truly original earcuff as well as at Chloè’s: her horseshoe-shaped necklaces with goat pendant and shark teeth could become a must even before the arrival of winter. Another key player is chain, one of the most classic and recurring themes in jewelry which, for the coming season will be used transversally: not only to define significant maxi necklace and bracelet profiles but also as a decorative element in the hair and as print on sophisticated garments. A special mention goes to the Gucci show, where indicating a trend would be an understatement. In fact, the jewelry by Alessandro Michele strikes our imagination, redeeming accessories from past traditions and customs, providing us with the chance to discover fascinating and provocative artistic designs. We spoke about it here.
