Daydreaming

Daydreaming

Otherness is a contemporary jewelery brand based in Maastricht, founded in 2014 by Chrissie Pepels with a desire to express her love for surrealism and share an unconventional vision of the world with others.
Your creations reflect an aesthetic which is playful and strange at the same time, it almost comes naturally to compare them to a fairy tale such as Alice in Wonderland, do you agree?

Films like Alice in Wonderland or The Neverending Story are key to my job, because I grew up watching them. I find daydreaming calming, thinking that anything is achievable. I love the surreal, the drama: the sensation of feeling emotions without the need to get something in return amuses and entertains me. Life should not be taken too seriously otherwise it would be only human logic, rules and feelings. So have fun!

What is the primary source of your inspiration?

Otherness_ciondoloOtherness_collanaMusic, cinema, humor, dreams, the work of producer Quentin Dupieux and David Lynch, the humor of The Mighty Boosh, are all elements that encourage me to create. Even though most of my ideas come from daydreaming. All of a sudden, fun ideas appear in my mind, I’m not quite sure about the exact source of inspiration.  Initially they are exaggerated ideas such as a large choker necklace in the form of a knife, then from there, as I try to make the design more accessible to the everyday; comes a ring, bracelet, earrings ...

What kind of woman do you think of while designing Otherness jewels?

When I create, I mainly think of jewels that I would wear myself. But if I have to think of a type of woman, I’d say Otherness_collanea young contemporary woman who doesn’t follow anyone.

What lies in the future for Otherness, have you any fixed objectives?

To have more sales outlets and present my work at a trade fair. Seeing my jewelry worn in the street or photographed on Instagram is a great feeling! I hope to experience it more often • MC
