The Apsara (Celestial Maiden), brooch by Wallace Chan

Chinese flying Apsara has been an icon of the Dunhuang Grottoes which dated back to the 4th century. More than 6,000 cave images of these elegant flying deities dancing and playing celestial music are of significant cultural and artistic value. Today, Apsara continues to be celebrated in many Asian cultures. As a goddess of music, dance, cloud, and water, she is also a symbol of beauty, love and life. Her body is tattooed with everlasting cloud-and-water motifs. Her ribbon is embellished with gemstones to resemble star trails, making reference to the creator's cosmic wonders and reflecting the spirit of our times for her ethereal qualities to glow evermore.
