‘Cuffs and Necks’ exhibition by Daniel Brush

On display at Van Cleef & Arpels' École des Arts Joailliers, the stunning work of the American jeweller

A fascinating journey through the art of New York-based cult jeweller and painter Daniel Brush is the main focus of the exhibition 'Cuffs and Necks' by Daniel Brush,  from October 13th to October 31st at L’École des Arts Joailliers, the jewellery school established by Van Cleef & Arpels and located near in Place Vendôme, Paris. On display a striking range of 'dog collars' and cuffs, all characterized by a unique combinations of steel, diamonds and other precious stones.

Brush is a self-taught artist, having developed his unique handmade technique over a 40-year period. His first encounter with jewelry, one that changed is life, saw him stand speechless, at the age of 13, in front of an incredibly decorated gold Etruscan bowl at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. The subtle art of granulation featured in that piece convinced Brush to embark on an incredible journey through art, jewelry making and metalwork, experimenting with different materials – steel, gold, aluminum – and different techniques. The result is the stunning work exhibited in Paris.. «I’ve always loved jewels that had absolutely no service and function,» Brush told the New York Times. «They would stay in your hand, and one would look at them. They were so independent, one wouldn’t even have to wear them—nor could one wear them.» Brush’s pieces are able to transcend conventional art categories and conjure an unmistakable, ageless aesthetic. The exhibition is open until October 31st.
