Disposable Cans in Jewelry by Euseok Han

The Korean artist's Stay Alive collection wins the Joya Barcelona Art jewelry and objects 2021

Instead of crumpling them up, Euseok Han creates her jewelry from used cans. A technique that, in 2021, won her the Joya Barcelona Art jewelry and objects with the special Milano Jewelry Tour communication prize.
Euseok Han, an artist based in Seoul, South Korea, has brought the most creative recycling to life with her Stay Alive collection, designed and produced in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.
«I think people, including myself, have a responsibility to protect the nature of the planet we live on. I will continue to make jewelry from waste materials, such as plastic bags or recycled cans. I want my work not only to be seen as a reused object but also as a beautiful item of jewelry that everyone wants to wear,» said the artist.

And so, her jewelry: large, light and brightly colored necklaces, rings and brooches. Simple disposable objects, considered as one of the main causes of environmental pollution, thus become creations with an oriental and definitely original flair that do not go unnoticed.

In this collection in fact, Han uses discarded cans to express the beautiful colors of coral that are gradually disappearing, dedicating many hours of work to bring just one of her creations to life. In this process, the letters of the Korean alphabet, the brands and colors printed on the recycled cans perfectly reflect our contemporary culture and our lifestyle that is making us slaves to disposable products. The artist makes the pieces entirely by hand from a renewable plastic called “PLA”. Her skillful work and assembly of old aluminum cans enables her to produce a final result that is always elegant, with surprising shapes that label them as unique and sustainable pieces and a curious and absolutely eccentric look.
