GemGenève: New Designers and Culture
The sixth edition of GemGenève: an initiative that promotes interaction between creativity, business and culture
Rare gems, passionately designed jewelry and culture: this was the winning combination at the latest edition of GemGenève, which ended in Geneva at the Palexpo on 14th May. The official closing bulletin reports «1,400 of the 4,320 visitors attended the show more than once, bringing the total number of visits to 6,487, over a thousand more than the November 2022 edition (5,205). These figures are an excellent sign, especially in light of the continuing impact of the crisis in Ukraine.» The event featured 192 professional dealers out of a total of 230 exhibitors - the highest number ever reached - in the usual relaxed atmosphere, where the relentless pace of business merged with the more reflective temporality required to appreciate the artistic beauty and learn new educational concepts.
The event was fueled by the creative proposals in the Designer Vivarium and the Emerging Talent & New Designers area, projects presented by schools, works by Villa of Lost Arts artisans, an exhibition at the Geneva Museum of Art and History (MAH) dedicated to automata and music, the LetuBooks and Gem Collectors bookshop displays, as well as some interesting workshops and numerous talks. «GemGenève seeks to create new vocations and build new bridges between generations, exhibitors, dealers, today's creators, museums and students,» said Director Mathieu Dekeukelaire at the opening event.
An objective that was thoroughly perceived by the show’s tangible ferment and synergy, an event where players from museums, art and jewelry schools, international designers and emerging talents interacted happily and effectively with journalists, buyers and jewelry enthusiasts. As a veritable breeding ground of creativity and culture, GemGenève demonstrated its ability to offer an immersive experience in the different areas that make up the jewelry industry, thanks to a varied program that was as creative as it was educational. The “hottest” area of the Designers' Village featured five avant-garde jewelry creators who took part in the Designer Vivarium, organized by jewelry historian Vivienne Becker, and eleven talented designers - six “Emerging Talents” and five “New Designers” - selected by the watchful eye of Nadège Totah. For the third year running, a special place was reserved for the Strong & Precious Art Foundation: for this edition, the Ukrainian designers' stand hosted the creations of six national designers. The education agora featured 13 talks, all available on digital.gemgeneve.com, a work session entitled “What does sustainability mean for jewelry?” in collaboration with the Gemmologie & Francophonie Association, whose report will be published in the Association's new magazine, due out in April 2024, and three interviews conducted by journalists with well-known personalities from the jewelry world: Andrea Machalova and Gaetano Cavalieri, President of the World Jewelry Confederation (CIBJO); Melanie Grant and Allen Adler, Managing Director of Adler; Melanie Grant and Benoit Repellin, Worldwide Head of Jewelry, Phillips.
