Vicenzaoro Highlights, January 2023: The Beauty of Ancient Egypt

At Vicenza’s Jewellery Museum until May 7th, 80 precious relics from the Egyptian Museum in Turin

The Egyptian Museum is certainly one of Turin’s great attractions, the second most important exhibition in the world after Cairo. Until 7th May 2023, the Jewellery Museum in Vicenza will also be able to boast a smidgeon of the fascination for this ancient civilization with an exhibition that sees a first-time selection of precious artefacts on display inside the Palladian Basilica, a perfect context since the capital of the Veneto region is the heart of an important goldsmith district. “Jewels and Amulets. Beauty in Ancient Egypt” is, in fact, an exhibition of some eighty artefacts bearing witness to the relationship that the people who flourished along the banks of the Nile had with body decoration. «The Jewellery Museum, which Italian Exhibition Group manages together with the Municipality of Vicenza, was set up to enrich and expand the city’s cultural and artistic offer and this project fits exactly into this perspective,» says Michela Amenduni, the Museum’s management director and IEG’s Jewellery & Fashion marketing manager. «Together with Vicenzaoro, it represents a tribute to the area’s goldsmith excellence and is a reference point for the entire sector. It is with great pleasure that we present these treasures to the Vicenza public, accompanied by a display of several scenes from wall paintings and papyri that depict them in their context of use.» Curator Paolo Marini then went into further detail: «The selected ornaments and amulets conceal, in their minuteness, unimaginable value. They are not only the representation of a status symbol or the manifestation of Egyptian technical expertise, they also express the feelings, fears and hopes of an ancient people through the choice of forms and materials with strong symbolic and performative meaning.»
