Vicenzaoro Highlights, January 2023: The Record Edition

Great prospects for the Made in Italy jewelry sector. Thanks to specific laws for promotion and protection abroad and the forthcoming candidature as Intangible Heritage of Humanity

In the almost 70-year history of Vicenzaoro, this is the edition of records. You only have to glance around the halls to see it: they are all occupied and every single available square meter has been sold.» These were the words spoken yesterday by Lorenzo Cagnoni, Chairman of Italian Exhibition Group, introduced by Marco Carniello, Global Exhibition Director Jewellery & Fashion at IEG, during the Opening Ceremony that saw the participation of an elite panel of spokespersons from the world of politics and industry in a sort of introductory round table on the main themes that will be touched upon during these five days of the event. «We should never tire of repeating it, but Vicenzaoro, which in this edition sees the participation of 1,300 exhibitors from 36  countries, is now one of the sector’s top three events worldwide and unquestionably, we have before our eyes, the rewarding response of the markets. An unimaginable result up until recently, which has far exceeded the objectives, albeit ambitious, that we at IEG, had set ourselves, namely to return to the pre-Covid situation within a short time. Instead, we can now proudly state that we are the European leader,» continued President Cagnoni, who, before passing the floor to the local authorities, thanked the team, led by Mr. Carniello, that is always attentive to the needs of customers and ready to take on the many challenges that the various international situations dictate. Taking this as their cue, the mayor of Vicenza, Francesco Rucco, and the vice-president of the province, Maria Cristina Franco, then took the stage at the Palladium Theatre to further emphasize the close collaboration between the parties - the city, the province and IEG - united during the pandemic period to ensure that the sector never stopped. A trial of strength that was won and that is now bearing fruit with exhibition facilities and a historic center – which will stage the ninth edition of VIOFF, Vicenzaoro’s Out of Show – all brought to life by an unprecedented melting pot of nationalities. Next to take the floor were the Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, and the Director General of ITA, Agency Roberto Luongo. Among the topics touched upon, the Minister anticipated that the next financial law will include the so-called “New Attachment to the maneuver” which focuses on enhancing the value of Made in Italy in the world and which will see more stringent rules against counterfeiting as well as further promotion of national products, while Luongo mentioned the recent report on economic data for 2022, a highly performing year that almost reached 10 billion in exports. «From the point of view of the Italian gold and jewelry sector, it is a very positive season, which, with the figures for the end of 2022, will probably mark a record. A record that will be reached thanks to Italian companies that work tirelessly on so many foreign markets, and on which we at ITA – Italian Trade Agency for the promotion abroad and internationalization of Italian companies, are working with the cooperation of our offices. We play a leading role in the promotion of our events abroad, also in collaboration with Italian Exhibition Group, but the cornerstone of our promotional action, which we have supported with very significant funding, is related to the gold district of Vicenza. Today at Vicenzaoro, we have brought 400 buyers from 64 countries, also through the communication campaign carried out with IEG.» Fundamental future strategies for the development of the sector were also discussed with the last two guests, Stefano Micelli, economist and lecturer in Economics and Business Management at Ca' Foscari University in Venice, and Claudia Piaserico, President of Federorafi, with whom the age-old issue of the lack of human capital in which to invest in order to train new generations of professionals was addressed. After mentioning the prospect of the forthcoming candidature of Italian jewelry as Unesco Intangible Heritage, the President of the Veneto Region, Luca Zaia, made his closing remarks. Stimulated by the question on the reasons for the success of the local entrepreneurial system, he responded as follows: «Veneto boasts more than 1,300 companies, 80% of which can be classified as SMEs, with an average of 3.2 employees, up to a maximum of 15. It is not a “Fordist” system. On the contrary. But it is our strength. We are great innovators because a lot of research is done within these small realities, which means that we are always one step ahead!»
