Beauty & Harmony by Sophia Vari
The Greek artist Sophia Vari shows her jewelry works at the Louisa Guinness Gallery, from 1st October – 8th November 2019
Jewels like sculptures or wearable pieces of art? This is the question you may ask yourselves when looking at the works of Sophia Vari. «When I create a jewel, I don’t think about a ‘jewel’ but a ‘sculpture’, putting in all my convictions and strength. It is only later that I adapt the sculpture with technical tools to make it wearable» says the internationally-acclaimed Greek artist who is now protagonist at the Louisa Guinness Gallery with the exhibition Beauty & Harmony: a retrospective of over 50 works including her jewelry but also paintings, sculptures and objects from the past three decades. And If only the highest quality materials from marble to bronze are used in Vari’s large-scale work, similarly, her jewelry pieces combine the most refined materials such as gold, silver, wood, ebony, leather, root emerald and sapphire among others. Each piece is a part of a limited edition or is a unique work, incised with the artist’s signature and numbered like her sculptural and pictorial works. As well as her painting and sculptures, her jewelry works are inspired by the exploration of bold geometric forms, and the examination of volume, painterly curves and lines. The result is an original style that is both peaceful and elegant.
