He is in a perfect position to come up with a sort of ‘top ten’ in terms of the most popular questions on metallurgy. This is the theme of his talk today at the Jewellery Technology Forum 2018. Here he gives us a preview of the questions that have been most popular recently. «Most definitely, one of the most frequent and recurring questions is about methods for obtaining a more durable and resistant silver alloy,» says Friso. «The answer - obviously, excluding adding harmful or allergenic products to the alloy - is thermosetting, or in other words, placing it in the furnace at a mid-range temperature, which gives the jewelry piece greater durability or more rigidity where needed. Another topic that often comes up when speaking to clients has to do with gold alloys in unusual colors like violet, purple, sky blue and green. The problem is that, in the lab, it is often easy to obtain these kinds of alloys, but when it comes to production, there are issues to contend with like their tendency to oxidize, low resistance to temperature and fragility. In this case, the answer is to treat them as if they were precious stones. Actually, the few companies in the world that use these alloys set them in traditional metals in very simple forms as if they were gems. Jewelry is also technological research, and we are working on that front as well, convinced that the future will give us the opportunity to use these alloys like the way we use the classic yellow, rose or white gold today.» If jewelry means research, JTF is the time for showcasing this research... «Certainly, and not just in a technological way. As in the past, this year, we have brought in speakers outside this area, or even outside the jewelry industry. For example, lawyer Silvia dalle Nogare will talk to us about protecting our personal data, which is a crucial topic in terms of the relationship between clients and suppliers, especially in the Internet era. And I am happy to point out that we’ve included a lot of women on the panel this year. Five of the eight speakers are women. This shows the change that is taking place in a traditionally male field like technology.»
