Eliza Walter's work and life offer great inspiration on how to embrace the concept of sustainability in its entirety. Considered a pioneer of British ethical jewelry, the English jeweler is a fully-fledged vegetarian and wears only vintage or second-hand clothes. Her studio in West London is furnished entirely with recycled furniture and upholstery. Eliza had always dreamed of launching a jewelry brand that combined her personal commitment to sustainability with her taste for design, and so, after studying Art History at Bristol University and training as a goldsmith at London's Hatton Garden, in October 2017, she founded Lylie, the UK's first fully circular jewelry brand. It is all based on the “Gold Exchange”, an innovative method through which you can recycle gold or silver jewelry that is no longer worn by going to the website and following the instructions. An accurate guide checks the type and weight of the precious metal to obtain an estimate of the value of the jewel. Prices change daily and are set by the London Bullion Market, but the brand offers 7.5% above market value to encourage recycling. To proceed, just fill out a form and choose a mailing preference, which is either through reusable postage envelopes (with a prepaid label attached) or a PDF of the prepaid envelope, sent via email. Envelopes/labels are guaranteed for next-day delivery and are insured up to a value of £2,500. Once the parcel arrives, the contents are assessed and a credit note is issued. This is how all the collections created by the brand come to life. They are the result of recycled gold obtained through this revolutionary method, combined with recycled antique or lab-grown diamonds. Strictly unisex, their aesthetics echo a declared love for the natural world and respect for the environment, favoring mostly organic shapes, such as Sea Treasures, which Eliza designed in response to the global destruction of coral reefs, or Gathering Clouds, which captures the romanticism of the sky.
