Busatti Milano: The Absolute Red of the Ruby
Luca Busatti reflects on Busatti Milano’s bond with precious gems, focusing on the ruby, one of the most coveted colored stones of the moment
Red and vivid. In Luca Busatti’s opinion, the perfect ruby possesses these two characteristics. Since 2023, he has been managing Busatti Milano together with brother Andrea and cousins Barbara and Simone, third generation of the family that founded the brand in Milan in the late 1940s. «Bright red and absolute clarity are the essential characteristics of our rubies. That would be the ideal since finding rubies without any inclusions is extremely difficult. Especially Burmese rubies, which, by nature, have more inclusions than those from other places.» Over the years, the brand has built up an impressive reputation fueled by the uniqueness of rare gems. «Selecting a stone is much more complicated than one might think. When you go to a trade show, you come across thousands of stones, but the vast majority have certain flaws that make them uninteresting to us. When you finally find the right gem, you fall in love with it instantly.» It is precisely that love that triggers the entire creative process. «Gems have absolute priority in the design of our jewelry: their quality is the basis for each item’s design. In order: gem, idea, design, creation.» The choice of metal follows the same logic. In the case of rubies, tradition dictates that yellow gold is the natural ally because it amplifies the warmth and tonal depth of the gem. «It has always been the most suitable for enhancing a ruby, but if the stone is truly extraordinary, white gold can also be used. Furthermore, black titanium can also hold real surprises in certain creations.» Measuring oneself against the unpredictability of nature, which always produces different gems, is therefore the first act in a design story made up of intuition, interpretation, passion and style, which Busatti Milano carries forward by relying on impeccable savoir-faire and a constant drive towards experimental research.
